Tour Overview
Embark on a memorable journey to the summit of Haleakalā National Park, where you’ll have the chance to spot a variety of native Hawaiian birds, including the ‘Apapane, ‘I’iwi, ‘Alauahio (Maui Creeper), ‘Amakihi, Pueo (Short-eared Owl), Nene (Hawaiian Goose), and more. A comprehensive checklist will be provided, featuring both common and Hawaiian names for the birds found on Maui.
Throughout the tour, you’ll enjoy comfortable transportation and complimentary refreshments, such as juices, fruits, and snacks, as well as a hearty picnic lunch. Along the way, you’ll learn about Maui’s rich ecology, history, and captivating myths and legends. At the summit, be sure to catch a glimpse of the rare Ahinahina (Silverword) plant, and take in stunning panoramic views perfect for photo opportunities.
After exploring Haleakalā, head to the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge, a great spot for birdwatching, where you may encounter the Hawaiian Stilt, Hawaiian Coot, and, depending on the season, migratory shorebirds. This tour is suitable for birders of all experience levels and lasts about 7 hours.
Important Information
- Elevation: Due to the effects of avian malaria on native honeycreepers, we travel to an elevation of 7,000 feet to find these species. Additionally, we head up to the summit of Haleakalā to seek out Nene, Pueo, and Chukars, while soaking in breathtaking views. Please be prepared for a fair amount of driving during the tour.
- Binoculars: Available for use at no extra cost.
- Weather: Haleakalā’s temperatures can be significantly cooler (20-40°F lower) than at sea level, and the weather can be unpredictable. We recommend wearing a rain jacket and a hoodie to stay comfortable.
